Typology: A French Brand Worth Trying
As a professional shopper in the wild world of women’s fashion, it’s no surprise that I have a sixth sense for uncovering the best products online. Whether it’s something my favorite podcaster is offering a discount code for, an independent company promising to reverse my latest aging concerns, or that shoe brand you keep seeing ads for, there’s a good chance I’m going to buy it, test it, and share my thoughts.
Today, I bring you my review of the Typology Tinted Serum with Vitamin C.
Typology is an online-only skincare and makeup brand that promotes simplicity, transparency, and natural ingredients. Having been a devout Beautycounter customer for many years, it was hard to come to terms with finding a replacement for their Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer. When Beautycounter paused to reset its brand under the direction of its former CEO, I was left with limited options if I wanted to stay loyal to clean, natural products.
I had heard of Typology (I’m a sucker for anything claiming to be French) and, after a bit of research, discovered that Typology scored 90/100 on the Yuka app. Pretty impressive, IMO.
After scraping the last bit of tinted moisturizer out of my Beautycounter bottle, I knew it was time. I ordered the Typology Tinted Serum with Vitamin C in shade #2/Light.
First Impressions
The packaging impressed me right away. It arrived in a compostable brown paper mailer, and the beautiful glass bottle was wrapped in corrugated paper to prevent breakage or leakage. The eco-friendly approach, combined with the simple and elegant branding, felt perfectly aligned with the company’s ethos.
The product arrived on time—just as I ran out of my previous product—so the timing couldn’t have been better.
Trying It Out
First, a note about my skin: It’s incredibly picky. I’ve struggled with tinted creams and Vitamin C serums in the past because they’re often too heavy, leading to breakouts. Even the Beautycounter Dew Skin took a few weeks to stop triggering acne for me. So, I was nervous about trying another product that might require me to pull out concealer for the next week or two.
Thankfully, the reviews gave me hope. Many people with sensitive, acne-prone skin mentioned having no issues with this tinted serum, so I gave it a shot.
My makeup routine is pretty simple—mostly eye makeup, with little effort to conceal my skin. After washing my face, I followed my usual skincare routine and applied the Typology Tinted Serum.
The product comes with a long dropper applicator. I used about half a dime-sized amount, rubbing it between my fingers before applying it to my skin.
The results? The finish was matte, perfectly matched my shade, and blurred my blemishes effortlessly. Unlike other products that sit on top of my skin and rub off throughout the day, this formula seemed to absorb into my skin, offering what I hope are long-term Vitamin C benefits. Instead of just covering blemishes, it blurred them naturally.
I followed up with my cream blush, which applied smoothly over the serum.
Pros
- Hydrating: My skin feels more hydrated compared to when I used my previous tinted cream. (Though, to be fair, my increased water intake might also be helping!)
- Precise Applicator: If I needed to mix shades, the dropper would make it super easy.
- Lightweight: The serum soaks into the skin, leaving behind a breathable tint.
- Clean Formula: Scoring 90/100 on Yuka!
- Multi-Benefit: It evens out and brightens skin, eliminating the need for a separate Vitamin C serum.
- Affordable: Compared to other popular skin tints, Typology’s pricing feels fair.
Cons
- Online Only: You’ll need to plan ahead for reordering.
- Opaque Bottle: The glass bottle might make it hard to tell when you’re running low.
- Not a Moisturizer: This isn’t a tinted moisturizer, so you’ll still need to apply a version of a moisturizer before using the serum.
- Limited Variety: I'm fortunate to not struggle finding my shade in cosmetics but if you are on either end of the spectrum, super fair or super dark, I can't say for certain how inclusive the shades offered are.
The Verdict
The big question: Will I continue ordering the Typology Tinted Serum with Vitamin C?
Yes! 1,000 times yes! I’m excited to explore more Typology products as I phase out my Beautycounter favorites.
If you’re searching for a clean, safe tinted serum or looking to incorporate a multi-beneficial formula into your routine, I highly recommend giving the Typology Tinted Serum with Vitamin C a try.
